Why Did Sarah Palin Decide To Step Down?
The political world is still in relative shock over the announcement by Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin that she will be stepping down more than a year before her term was due to end. In interviews since her announcement she has denied rumors that she is stepping down to prepare for a presidential run in 2012 although she will not rule it out. Her stated reasoning has been that the controversies surrounding her since the 2008 presidential election.
Some have speculated that the confrontation with David Letterman over a questionable joke about her daughter was the deciding factor. While Palin has not cited that incident directly as one of the causes for the decision to step down the incident took a visible toll on the Palin family. Even after Letterman apologized for the joke Governor Palin seemed disturbed by the joke being aimed at her family.
Future plans for the Palin family are unknown by most at this time and sources close to the family are being tight-lipped. Palin’s political action committee (SarahPAC) has been raising funds to promote conservative candidates and ideals with the stated goal of: “...building America's future, supporting fresh ideas and candidates who share our vision for reform and innovation.” Some have called this a likely precursor to a run for the White House in 2012 but it is far too early to know for certain what role if any Palin will play in the 2012 race.
Aside from the rumors of a run for the White House Palin is also facing several ethics investigations with the latest being related to her requesting a per diem for living in her home in Wasilla instead of the Governor’s mansion in Anchorage. This along with questions about the requested firing of a state trooper who had been married to Palin’s sister as well as various other questions of possible unethical behavior are the types of things that have dogged Palin since she was named the John McCain’s running mate in the 2008 election.
Whatever the reason for her decision to step down, it has once again made Sarah Palin front page news. While the world may not know what she is up to there seems to be no lack of interest in her activities. Only time will tell if that will continue for the long term.
