Don’t Fall For The Hype
With election season swinging into full gear the media is overflowing with political ads. The one thing you can depend on is that none of them will be completely honest. The ads will tell you how bad one person is or how good another is but the truth is that in most cases the person most able to afford political ads is the person you should least want in office if you are an average Joe. The rich are concerned with the things that matter to the rich for the most part. If you want to have leaders that are concerned with the things you find important then you need to spend the time looking into their history and finding out if their actions actually match with their rhetoric.
As with the candidates the ballot propositions are not what they appear to be in the ads. Corporations and deep-pocketed interest groups will spend millions to make millions and even billions by convincing voters to support laws that solidify their advantages over their opposition. In California a power company is sponsoring legislation that will give them a virtually permanent monopoly and selling it as empowering voters. The ads are nothing less than an attempt to trick voters into doing things that are not in their best interests by pushing emotional buttons.
The important thing for voters to do is to learn about what and who they are voting for. Just because the television commercial says one candidate is good or bad does not mean it’s true. Voters need to make sure they know what is true and what is not. There are organizations like FactCheck.org that can help voters to learn the truth about the things they are voting on. Just reading the voter guide from the state can help you make a more informed choice about ballot initiatives.
Democracy only serves the people when the people make the right choices. People only make the right choices when they take the time to inform themselves about the issues of the day. Don’t fall for the hype of political advertising machines. Learn about the facts and vote with your head. It’s our country and our future that are at stake.
